M. Weller first book of short stories Wanna Be a Street Sweeper was published in 1983. It immediately attracted attention of critics and readers by its precise and resourceful style and surprising plots. The Heartbreaker (1988), The Technology of a Short Story (1989), A Rendez-vous With a Celebrity (1990) followed. Next two books became bestsellers - an educational novel Major Zvyagins Adventures (1991) and Legends of Nevsky Prospect (1993) that critics called the most amusing book of the latest years. A short novel The Knife of Seryozcha Dovlatov caused a literary scandal. His last bestseller, the novel The Herald From Piza (2000) was printed 11 times during this year. M. Weller is the most published of non-commercial Russian writers - a total circulation of his books is about 400 thousand copies in 38 editions only during year 2000.
