The monograph is a successful attempt at reinterpreting the traditional view of the Union's history in the Russian Empire as an era of persecution and martyrdom, and a mass rejection of Rusyn Catholics by their ethno-confessional identity. Founded in 1798, the Lutheran Greek-unitary diocese is regarded by the author as a living community which, despite religious restrictions on the part of the official authorities, was able to maintain its organizational structure and develop a rather successful pastoral, cultural, educational and charitable activity. The phenomenon of the "long duration" of the Union Church in Volhynia until the 1840s (unlike the Kyiv region and Podillya) made it possible for the clergy and lay people to interact closely at the parish level, to actively support the local nobility of Latin and "Russian" rites, and the previous successes of confessionalization in Kyiv.
