This collective monograph takes a legal-historical perspective on the extent to which courts in the Czech lands in the 18th-20th centuries followed the literal wording of the applied legal regulation in their practice and to what extent they went beyond it in their decision-making. Using selected legal institutions of civil, administrative, criminal and economic law, the authors examine this question through an analysis of contemporary sources of law and at the same time an analysis of the application practice of judicial authorities in the 18th-20th centuries. Readers can see that some of the pitfalls faced by contemporary justice are not new and that the law had to deal with them in times past when dealing with the timeless conflict between law and justice.
