The work shows the Dictionary of the contemporary Slovak language from the point of view of codification. For the Slovak literature-language environment in which this dictionary is created (four volumes have been published so far), the application of conflicting codification attitudes to the concepts of language user, norm and literature is characteristic. The text will show the reader how the author-editor collective of the dictionary approaches them and how the given starting points are reflected in its lexicographic practice, e.g. when determining whether words belong to individual types of non-literary lexicon or when processing anglicisms. Users' attitudes will also be given space. The reader will also learn what role the frequency of language means plays in determining the norm and what consideration is given to their functioning in differentiated communication environments. In this context, the work could not avoid the fact that the erosion of communication standards in the public environment is accompanied by the acceptance, even preference, of verbal aggression.
