The article summarizes the results of four years of research of lakes located in Murmansk — the largest city beyond the Arctic Circle. The authors collected data on the main morphometric features of the lakes, the chemical composition of water and bottom sediments, the key sources of pollution of water bodies and the entire environment of Murmansk, as well as living organisms (plankton, benthos, ichthyofauna) inhabiting the city lakes. As a result of the comprehensive work, the current ecological state of the Murmansk lakes was assessed, the relationship between biotic and abiotic indicators was shown, and recommendations were given for the further use of urban water bodies, taking into account the fact that they are constantly used by local residents and visitors to the city for recreational purposes.
