The author of the book provides a detailed and balanced account of the history of fortification using the example of the defensive structures of Koenigsberg. The first of these was the Castle. The medieval cities of Kneiphof, Altstadt, Loebenicht, which were later united into Koenigsberg, also had their own fortifications. In 1843–1862, fortifications of the Second Rampart Ring were erected, which included an earthen rampart, 12 bastions, three ravelins, seven cavaliers, 12 gates, Fort Friedrichsburg, Meadow Lunette and two defensive towers. Between 1872 and 1892 a fort belt was created around Koenigsberg. From that time on, the city became a 1st class fortress and was considered impregnable. The book is based on very rare diagrams, historical photographs of the city’s defensive structures from the 13th century from German archives and private collections, and modern photographs of preserved objects. Drawings of the Wall Ring created specifically for this book will help the reader study the design features of the fortifications of Koenigsberg.
