Jozef Chelmonski (1849-1914) – both as a person and as an artist, he liked to stand out, followed his own path, and was true only to himself. The naturalism and uncompromising nature of his youthful canvases, along with his rejection of established canons of beauty, made his vision of the world difficult for critics shaped by academic norms to accept. Embittered and misunderstood in Warsaw circles, he went to Paris, where he gained recognition and fame. After returning to Poland, he gradually withdrew from the world, friends, and loved ones, focusing entirely on his work. He is remembered in the history of Polish painting primarily as the creator of unparalleled, atmospheric landscapes.
