Today, the National Academy of Sciences as the highest state scientific organization of the republic has been assigned the functions of organizing, conducting and coordinating basic and applied research and development in the field of natural, technical, humanitarian, social sciences; increase the effectiveness of scientific achievements; training of highly qualified scientific personnel; strengthening the influence of science on the development of the economy, education, culture of the Belarusian people, as well as performing, within the limits of authority, certain functions of the republican government body. Currently, the National Academy of Sciences has seven departments: Agrarian Sciences; biological sciences; humanities and arts; medical sciences; physical and technical sciences; physics, mathematics and computer science; chemistry and earth sciences. As of August 1, 2008, over 16 thousand people worked in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, including more than 2.5 thousand doctors and candidates of sciences. Membership of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus: 81 academicians, 118 corresponding members, 2 honorary and 12 foreign members. Over 80 years of its existence, the National Academy of Sciences has become the country's largest scientific center, famous not only for the scientific community of Europe, but also for the world. Academic science went and goes hand in hand with the whole Belarusian society -in the time of severe trials and in peacetime. A lot has been done during this time: authoritative scientific schools have been established in the Academy of Sciences, world-famous scientists have grown up, who solve a number of major theoretical and applied problems.
