The monograph presents the key components of the concept of the imperial policy of acculturation as a methodological alternative to the colonial approach to the history of Russia. Discussions surrounding the application of the acculturation paradigm to the history of the Russian Empire and its southeastern frontier are revealed. Based on materials from the Ural-Volga and Central Asian territories of the Russian Empire, the imperial policy of acculturation of “foreigners” through the means of education is examined. The place of “Russian-foreign” schools of the Orenburg region in the acculturation mechanism of the period of accelerated post-reform modernization is shown.
