The main character of the novel is a former army intelligent service officer, who has been bed-ridden for many years. Close relatives and friends of the veteran due to different reasons don't tell him the truth about changes in the country. Television is also lying by broadcasting news of the 1970s, when Brezhnev still rules Russia. Yet, the old warrior guesses that he is being deceived and undertakes an effort to handle his fate himself.
