The author was a French philosopher, doctor and traveler, who spent almost 9 years in India (1659—1667). Working as a doctor at the court of the Indian ruler he had an opportunity to learn much about the public order and culture of this country. In his book he describes the main difference in the way of life in the Oriental countries from the one in the European countries.
