The book covers one of the most controversial and complicated periods in the life of peasants from the Western region of Russia (contemporary Smolensk, Bryansk and Kaluga Regions) - from the revolution of 1917 till the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). The authors regard peculiarities of the agrarian revolution (1917-1918), social and economic development of the western village during the so called "military communism", changes in village culture and social psychology. The policy of collectivization and its consequences are also analyzed.
