The second volume presents a monograph by the Israeli, Russian, American and German researchers devoted to different aspects of life of the Jews in the Russian Empire covering the period from the First Partition of Poland in 1772 till the February Revolution in 1917. It touches upon such issues as the history of state legislation on the Jews, the Jewish community, religious and political movements, demographic processes, formation of a new Jewish literature in three languages - Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian, emergence of various forms of national culture in the territory of the Russian Empire, etc.
