The first volume covers a large period of historical development of the Baikal region - from the time the region joined the Russian state until the mid-19th century. The second volume examines the natural process of economic, political and socio-cultural development of the region as part of Russia in the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. The third volume examines the features of the socio-economic and spiritual development of the indigenous population of the Irkutsk Province, the process and results of its interaction with the Russian population, the administrative policy of the state towards the aborigines, the Christianization of the Buryats as an integral part of its outskirts policy, and the confessional diversity of the inhabitants. The fourth and final volume is devoted to the events that took place in the region at the beginning of the 20th century.
