This scholarly study, based on archival documents, examines in detail the period 1939-1940. The activities of the Lithuanian language department of the Antanas Smetona Institute of Lithuanian Studies are also discussed, as well as the features of the previous linguistic activities in Lithuania. In other words, the aim is to more widely reveal the origins of the institutionalization of the Lithuanian language and linguistics and to systematically evaluate the works of linguists of that time.
