Boyan Penev (1882-1927) was one of the foremost Bulgarian literary historians and critics of his time. He was the first to attempt a comprehensive large-scale study on the literary process from the beginning of the National Revival Period (i.e. from the 18th century) until the early 20th century. The book is based on a course of lectures which Penev delivered as a professor at Sofia University. It is so remarkably structured and rigorously argumentative that it remains unparalleled in Bulgarian literary science to this day.
