The book by Robert Noks is a unique source on the history and historical ethnography of the Cingaleses, the dwellers of Ceilon (now Shri - Lanka), on the time, when the interests of different European colonialists – the Portuguese, Dutchmen and Englishmen- came across on the far island in the Indian ocean. The author of the present work spent twenty years in captivity of the Senegalese tzar, making notes of the everyday life of the locals. His notes are distinguished by objectivity, striving for accuracy in details, attention to many sides of the daily life and traditional culture of the locals, to their leader’s temper, to natural peculiarities of the island, its flora and fauna and its economic structure as well. R. Noks also describes details of the island’s colonization and relation of the local people towards the strangers from Europe.
