Diedre (Georg) Lukacs is one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century and probably the most ambitious Marxist philosopher of this century. Of particular importance are his works on aesthetics and, first of all, on the theory of the novel - the treatise “The Theory of the Novel” (1916, 1920) remains fundamental to this day. “Historical Novel” is a work created by Lukacs in 1936-1937 and published on the pages of the Soviet magazine “Literary Critic” in 1937-1938. It is important both from the point of view of the evolution of Lukacs's views, his movement towards the late theory of the novel of the 1950s and 60s, and as an expression of the mature Marxist aesthetic theory of the 1930s, as well as as a large-scale study of the historical novel. In the appendix to Lukacs’s treatise, which was published for the first time in book editions, there is his article “The Novel as a Bourgeois Epic,” published in volume 9 of the “Literary Encyclopedia” (1935) and giving a general outline of his theory of the novel as of the mid-1930s. The publication was prepared for publication and commented by the scientific director of the Center for Research of Russian Thought of the Institute of Education and Humanities of the Baltic Federal University. Immanuel Kant (Kaliningrad) Andrei Aleksandrovich Tesley.
