Francois Lenormant (1837-1883) was Orientalist and the author of numerous publications on Oriental history. The book comprises an overview of the primitive state of man (les temps primitives), namely the biblical story, stories that are parallel to the biblical story of creation, the Fall of man, antediluvian patriarchs, the flood and, finally, a review of peoples and languages based on classification of the book of Genesis and modern linguistics. Lenormand tries to reconcile the testimonies of various sources.
