The author of the work V.M.Gliants investigates the life and creative work of the avowed Ukrainian writer Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol from the very peculiar perspective. Theme stated in the title may sound at first sight as a nonsense but due to the analysis of conjecture of D.I.Chizhevskii and various documentary materials and literary works by Gogol the author comes to the conclusion that presentiment of the near end of "this century" was truly the basic religious intuition of the writer. The life and creative work of Gogol appear as tragic loneliness of a misunderstood prophet.
