War between Georgia and Abkhazia in 1992-1993 has had tremendous consequences for the post-soviet space. It blocked major traffic corridors making communication between Russia and Transcaucasia significantly harder. This war has put the "Abkhazian question on top of Georgia's political agenda and has become a major obstacle to the development of relations between Russia and Georgia. This book attempts to generally outline the long and complicated history of the relationship between the two nations. The book contains fragments of the published declarations, documents and memoirs that relate to the national problems of Abkhazia from the fall of the Russian Empire to the beginning of war between Georgia and Abkhazia. A short chronology of Abkhazia's history from 1917 to 1992 is included for convenience.
