Written by a professor of Moscow Theological Academy Alexei Lebedev in 1882 as an answer to critical reclamations to his thesis for a Doctor's degree from archbishop A.Ivantsov-Platonov, the book reveals anticriticism and scientific impetuosity that enabled Lebedev to state a numerousness of important thoughts concerning the issue of the ecumenical councils of the IVth - Vth centuries, as well as religious studies in general and particularly his creative method. The questions raised by the professor concern not only religious and scientific situation in Russia at the end of the XIXth century but also can be related to modern religious and scientific topical issues. Furthermore, the book contains supplementary information that qualifies previous facts on the history of the ecumenical councils of the IVth - Vth centuries, as well as of the well-known dispute.
