Sergei Makarenko wrote it in collaboration with the famous sports journalist, now editor-in-chief of the magazine "Sport Time" Ivan Kahnovich. What are the memories about? About the success at the Olympics in Rome back in 1960, about the development of kayaking and canoeing in the country, about his life's journey. “From the Brest Fortress to the Olympic Summit” — the title of the book is, of course, not accidental. Sergey Makarenko’s happy childhood ended in the terrible year of 1941, in Brest, where his father served as deputy commander of the 33rd separate engineering regiment and where he became one of the defenders of the Brest Fortress. Reading childhood memories of the beginning of the war, the cruelty of the fascists and policemen, the anticipation of the bright Victory Day — tears come to your eyes… Only in the mid-50s, when the writer Sergey Smirnov told the entire Soviet Union about the fate of the heroes of the Brest Fortress, it became clear: Lavrenty Makarenko died on the fourth day of defense, on June 26… Today, when visiting Brest, Sergey Makarenko always lays flowers at the memorial slab with his father’s name.
