Travelers are always either going or coming, they need shelter and refreshment. So, after wars, deportations and other acts of destruction, inns and eateries have always been the first to rise from the ashes. Gradually, hotels and restaurants began to grow out of these simple eating places, and bakeries and wine cellars became cafes and tea houses. How coffee shops became “real nests of the Tartu spirit”, who the customers of the restaurants and bars were, what they ate and drank and how politely they behaved, can be read in Heili Reinart’s comprehensive overview, illustrated by over 100 archive photographs.
