For the first time, two works by the author are published together, which were conceived and directly declared by him as parts of a single whole, fragments of a single course on the methodology of the history of literature: "Alexander Nikolaevich Veselovsky" (1922, published 1927), and "The Formal Method in the History of Literature" (1925, published 1927). This allows not only to perceive the author's most famous work on the "formal method" much more accurately and correctly, but also to see the contours of his own original philosophical program of the foundations of philology, developed by him within the framework of Baden neo-Kantianism.
Boris Mikhailovich Engelhardt was an outstanding Russian philologist and historian of the first half of the twentieth century.
