The final novel in the trilogy by military writer N. Cherkashin, dedicated to the events of the initial period of the Great Patriotic War in Western Belarus (the first two books - "Brest Gate" and "God Does Not Play Dice" - were also published by the Zvyazda Publishing House). The plot is based on the military actions of the 3rd Army of the Western Front and the fates of its commander General Kuznetsov, Lieutenant General Karbyshev, as well as many other real-life soldiers and commanders. Battle episodes related to the defense of the city of Grodno, the capture of the fortification dungeon Camp Earthworm, are permeated with lyrical stories of three leading characters: Captain Shibarsky, Lieutenant Kestrel and Major Demchenko.
