The book is part of the series "European Studies" and traces the development of the EU's post-Cold War trade relations with Russia (1992-2018). The analysis rests on the assumption that the EU and Russia will remain somewhere between strategic partnership and "cold peace" in their trade and geopolitical relations for some time to come, with the two types of relations influencing one another. Strategic partnership can catalyze economic growth, develop the market environment and raise living standards, while "cold peace" can exacerbate the economic and political crisis between the EU and the Russian Federation, increase the trade sanctions and cause stalemate in two-way trade.
