The book uses easy-to-understand language to present tales from Bulgarian folklore related to real-life historical personalities (Prince Marko, St. John of Rila) or popular beliefs about the beginning of life on earth, the struggle between good and evil, and mythical creatures inhabiting the world alongside humans (fairies, vampires). Most of the stories are abridged and edited to make them understandable to today's readers. The book is recommended for teachers and students of the early part of the primary education level. The folk texts are accompanied by explanations entitled "What Do We Know Nowadays?" which put popular beliefs in a scientific context.
