This book is a collection of abstracts and reports presented at the conference 'Folk Song and Folk Music as the Symbol of Identity and the Object of Cultural Exchange' that was held by the Department of Folklore at the Institute of Estonia in 1996. This conference was devoted to identity - a subject that has become more and more topical all over the world. Participants of the conference discussed the following question: how to integrate into the present day world and its culture and at the same time to preserve ones ethnic and cultural peculiarities.
