In Lithuania as well as in Europe the personality of Georg Sauerwein (1831-1904), the German polyglot, poet, publicist, defender of the interests of small nations and supporter of pacifist movement, is well known to only a relatively small circle of the representatives of creative intelligentsia and academic community. Although from time to time one can read scientific articles about him, one sees streets named after this unique person. This work by Basanavicius is the first biographic monograph in historiography devoted to Sauerwein.
