The multi-faceted influence of ethnical factor on the political processes evolving in contemporary Russia is thoroughly and comprehensively analyzed in the work. The author examines ethnical situation, social and political status of native population in different national republics of Russian Federation. The national formations are divided into two groups while the level of interethnic tension is chosen as a criterion. The first category includes national entities with rather low degree of interethnic tension like Karelia, Mordovia, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Buryatia, Yakutia and others. The other group was composed of the North Caucasus republics named as a zone of potential or current conflicts (like Chechnia, Dagestan, the North Ossetia..). The situation in the above regions is analyzed both in general and in each single republic separately. Special emphasis is given to such factors as the correlation of native population and "colonists", development of national consciousness, participation of indigenes in political life and government, work force distribution between different sectors of economy and others. The study is saturated with various statistical data backing the author's conclusions.
