The substantive core of this book is the private letters of the young spouses Anna and Vasily Eremeev-Ryaihya;, as well as Vasily’s diary and letters from other residents of White Sea Karelia at the beginning of the 20th century. These living and emotional testimonies of the era open the door to the private space of the Karelian peasant, show how “ordinary” people experienced and comprehended the dramatic events of their time, how they saw themselves and their role in the life of their beloved Karelia. The research and materials show the specifics of self-identification of borderland residents who find themselves in the “force field” of Russia and Finland.
