After 1783, numerous travelers began to come to the Crimea on duty or simply out of curiosity. In an era of the dawn of modern science and the limited capacity of the press, travelers' notes created images of distant lands in the collective imagination of the West. These images influenced the thinking of readers of travel notes - intellectuals, entrepreneurs, statesmen, who used them in the development of various political, economic, military projects.
This book is the first comprehensive study in historiography of the image of Crimea, formed by the British, who visited the peninsula after its annexation to Russia. It analyzes the writings of ten travelers, English and Scots, who introduced educated readers to a distant country, where one could see picturesque landscapes and unusual animals, the remains of ancient and medieval buildings and representatives of exotic peoples, evaluate Russia's efforts to transform the region and propose their own plans for its economic development. and political development. These notes created a number of long-lived stereotypes that often remain relevant to this day.
