The work sums up results of 25-year researches carried out by the author in the field of Russian international ties (IX-XIIth centuries). It includes essays covering separate periods, that in aggregate give an integral picture of Russia's international activity during the first four centuries of its existence. Special emphasis is laid on the comparison of Old Russian and foreign (Latin, Byzantine, Old German, etc.) texts as well as on the interdisciplinary approach (methods and data of textual criticism, historical linguistics, genealogy, metrology, etc).
