Polish-Lithuanian diplomatic relations are quite controversial, having been established only in 1938 in a non-traditional manner, unprecedented in international practice. In fact, they took place on the very eve of World War II, when the de facto destruction of Polish statehood was only a year and a half away, and the Soviet occupation and annexation of Lithuania was just over two years away. This publication, therefore, conceptually and chronologically covers the situation from March 1938—the genesis and circumstances of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Poland and Lithuania, the spread of their content, and the trends and upheavals in their development—to June-July 1940, when the USSR launched an open aggression, occupied Lithuania (as well as Latvia and Estonia), and de facto destroyed Lithuanian statehood.
