In the summer of 1896, two Telsiai residents – Mykolas Brensteinas (1874-1938) and Leopoldas Andrijauskas (1868-1947) – left Telsiai for Liepaja. Brensteinas, a photography enthusiast, took a camera with him on the trip, and Andrijauskas, an artist, took a travel easel. Brensteinas, who had been interested in the past of Lithuania and especially Samogitia, ancient monuments, antiquities and art collections throughout his life, also took a school notebook with him, in which he described in his native Polish the impressions of the trip, the places he visited and the people he met, the works of art he saw and the historical values he had. This travel diary, which is important for understanding the past of Samogitia, is kept in the National Library of Poland and has until now been known to a narrow circle of historians and art historians. It is now presented to Lithuanian readers, translated into Lithuanian, with extensive and detailed comments, illustrated with late 19th century photographs, reproductions of paintings and maps. The book also contains a transcribed Polish text of the diary and detailed indexes.
