The Diary of the chief of the Russian Orthodox Mission in Jerusalem Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin, 1817-1894), an outstanding figure of the Russian Orthodox Church, Science and Culture, is a unique historical source of information. Almost thirty years he headed the Russian Orthodox Mission in Jerusalem (1865-1894), representing his country in the Middle East, defending the rights of Christian minority in a Muslim country, in cooperation and competition with churches and political representatives of the Western states. The main and invaluable merit of Antonin for Russia was the acquisition of numerous lands in the Holy Land, construction of churches and monasteries, pilgrim shelters and schools for the local Arab population. Scientific publication of Antonin’s diary is the most valuable historical source and literary monument of the Russian spiritual culture.
