In 1975, Romualdas Firkovicius prepared a typescript “Description of the documentary materials of Vilnius city architecture and historical monuments. Lithuanian Metrica” (hereinafter referred to as the Description). It contains Lithuanian annotations of 1,668 documents selected from 190 Lithuanian Metrica Record Books, relating to Vilnius architecture and historical monuments. In the conditions of that time, several copies of the typescript were printed on a typewriter, which were used by a narrow circle of specialists. Since it was not printed in a circulation accessible to everyone, few people could use this work of R. Firkovicius, and therefore many of those who wrote about the history of Vilnius during the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania did not always use the material provided by Lithuanian Metrica, because finding the necessary document in this huge archive requires a lot of effort and time. Therefore, after publishing this Description, it will be accessible to a wider circle of specialists and interested parties, and their works on 16th–18th century Vilnius would be supported as comprehensively as possible by the Lithuanian Metrica material, which has so far been insufficiently used in the research of this city. The Description consists of a preface by the compiler, an introduction to the Description, a typescript made with a computer text, annotations, verified by the compiler with the original typescript, and with the already printed 21 Lithuanian Metrica Note Books and the indicated document numbers there next to the corresponding Description numbers, as well as personal names, place names and a subject index.
