The novel is based on real events of the Russian-Turkish war (1877-1878), when a small Russian garrison of the fortress Bayazet, being deprived of water and food, suffering from unbearable summer heat, heroically survived a 23-day blockade of the numerous Turkish army, and was liberated by Russian troops.
