The second novel by Siegfried Lenz (1926–2014), one of the most significant German prose writers after World War II, was written in 1951. But German censorship did not allow its publication for political reasons due to the author’s obvious “pro-Eastern orientation.” The book was published only in 2016, two years after Lenz’s death, and immediately became a bestseller.
