Memoirs by G. Schroeder should be read carefully. This is not a scrupulous chronicle of events as the chronological order is disrupted deliberately nor it is a detailed biography as the author does not give a full-length description of the times, when he was growing up, although that might be interesting to read some autobiographic notes by a boy from a poor working family, who lived in a provincial town and succeeded to grew into a political leader. Schroeder is both a pragmatic and idealist at the same time, what makes him interesting. A pragmatic and skilled player in the complicated party struggle, starting his career in the Low Saxony, Schroeder remains a faithful successor of his prominent predecessors V.Brandt and G.Shmidt. The book includes the description of the German history in the global aspect as well as some thoughts about Europe’s present and future.
