Prof. Dr. Ivailo Dichev teaches cultural anthropology at Sofia University. He is a writer, an essayist, and an active participant in public debate. Dichev says: "It's all about the distance from which we choose to observe a given phenomenon. A culture may be impossible to see from the outside – the things that others do may irritate us because they make no sense to us, so we interfere, we try to improve them. When we step farther back, those other lives in front of us become complete, we discover unknown meanings, exotic motivations. It is this inner connection with the other world in front of us that we call culture - it is at once frightening and fascinating; we project ourselves into other roles out there, we experience the thrills of a different life which could have been our life. As we move farther and farther away, the optical illusion called culture begins to fade, the people across from us merge with the trees, the crawling creatures and the planets going around their orbits."
