Khristo Stefanov (1931—2013) belongs to the generation of master painters which entered and establish itself in Bulgarian artistic life in the 1960s. It is a very specific stage in the history of Bulgarian Art. It is "split in halves" between disappearing "classical" socialist realism and emerging changes which started in the second half of the 1970s and 1980s. Khristo Stefanov has always been a painter who along with the big and important social questions, experienced and revealed in his work the everyday, intimate, directly-human establishment. He has got his unique place in the panorama of contemporary visual plasticity arts in Bulgaria. His name stands duly and honourably together with Bulgarian bright and eminent masters of the brush whose scale is more important and more encompassing by concrete circumstances of life and events against whose background their life has passed.
