This is a collection of texts which were used in the debate about the conscience, the mission and the freedom of writers held in the Bulgarian press from 1945 to 1947, at the beginning of the communist regime. A kind of limited pluralism existed at that time which still allowed the discussion of important matters concerning the autonomy of literature. Here, readers will find almost forgotten articles and essays which were published in opposition and other newspapers and literary periodicals. The question about the autonomy of writers confronted with the prospect of an imminent communist dictatorship was at the core of the debate.
