The book first published in St.Petersburg in 1904 contains 14 outlines on nature, population, and history of Caucasus since ancient times to the end of the XIXth century. The main attention is paid to the dramatic events of the Caucasian War, which ended with capture of the leader of the Highlanders Shamil. Despite the fact that the first book was published over a century ago, it still remains a kind of work that gives a comprehensive picture of the Caucasus. And although the historiographic views of the authors are a little dated, the book is of undoubted interest to the contemporary reader. This edition has maintained the majority of illustrations from its first edition, supplied with lithograpies from the pictures of G.G. Gagarin. The text of the first edition is reproduced with minor amendments, and brought into line with modern spelling.
