The first collection of studies on the history of the key concepts in the Russian imperial period from the end of the XVIII century till 1917, based on the proceedings of the conference at the German Historical Institute in Moscow. On the basis of different texts - belles-lettres, legislative acts, press and ego-documents, the authors - historians, linguists, sociologists - reconstruct the emergence and development of the concepts of social and political spheres in such sections as “legislation”, “social stratification”, “society and public sphere”, “nation and empire”, “people and race”. The collection also covers the history and methodology of formation of different linguistic and cultural research schools, analyzes their applicability to Russian history. The book presents a bibliography of the existing work on the history of concepts of Russia. The collection opens a new project Studia europaea, which is realized within the scopes of Historia Rossica series. Studia europaea acquaints the Russian reader with the translation of key historical monographs and thematic collections of articles of new historical schools in Germany, and also presents the results of the activity of the German Historical Institute in Moscow in the field of research of Russia in XVIII - XX centuries and comparative history.
