Having drawn on the material of the late XIXth century Russian literature, the author views character sketch as a component of biography of literary character in the structure of Russian novel of the 1850s-1870s. For the first time, genre specificity of literary portrait is described on the basis of the tradition of "encomion"-novel, biographical "apocrypha" as well as publicist and social-philosophical essay.
