Georgi Stoikov Rakovski (1821-1867) is remembered primarily as a freedom-fighter who established the organized Bulgarian revolutionary movement aimed to overthrow Ottoman Turkish rule. He is also remembered as a writer and a poet, but few people know that he was a remarkable scholar, proficient in the languages of the Ottoman Empire as well as Old Greek and Latin. "Bulgarian Heritage" was a science magazine published by Rakovski. Its first issue (Book 1) came out in Bucharest in 1865, carrying fundamental studies by Rakovski on Bulgarian history. Among other topics, Book 1 discusses the popular religion of the Bulgarians and the ancient origins of their language. The present edition is in contemporary Bulgarian.
