V. Gapontsev, managing director, founder and President of IPG Photonics Corporation, was awarded the A. Shavlov Prize in 2009, annually awarded by the Laser Institute of America for outstanding contributions to the application of lasers in science, industry, education and medicine. V. Gapontsev was called "the father of the fiber laser industry that exists today, who became a pioneer in this area, and for half a century of scholarly work, founded and headed a world-famous manufacturing company that continues to change the laser industry."
