Bagrevand, the ancient province of the Ayrarat province of Greater Armenia, historically encompassed the Ararat and Aratsani valleys. It was a culturally and spiritually rich area, where, according to historians, numerous monasteries and churches were built, including the Monastery of St. John the Baptist, which was mentioned as early as the 5th century. Alashkert, in the heart of Bagrevand, was famous for its farming, winemaking, and writing traditions. The area has been a crossroads since ancient times, where centers of education, arts, and crafts were formed. Before the Ottoman rule, it was an exclusively Armenian settlement, and at the beginning of the 19th century, the majority of Alashkert’s population was still Armenian. Today, these names come down to us as a legacy, a record of memory and history.
